If you are remodeling your home and are unsure of the amount of money you have to spend on it, you may want to sit down and come up with a budget. Perhaps you are only remodeling one room and need to budget for that. Either way, it might be one of the most important steps you take to come up with a budget so that you can remodel without breaking the bank. Whether you want to create a custom garage or a custom home office, there are a few things that you can do to come up with a budget that will work for your remodeling project.
One thing that you may want to do is write down every last bit of income that you receive each month. If you have a full time job, a smaller job that you do on the side, or even money that you receive from an inheritance, make sure to add it all.
This will give you an idea of what to pull from. After you have written down everything you have coming in, you can write down everything you have going out. This might include a mortgage payment, utility bills, savings, insurance, babysitting money, etc. When every essential bill is written down, you will probably have a certain amount of money left, which is the money you could use for your remodel.
Now that you have an amount in mind, there are still some things that you might want to do so that you do not blow it all in one place. Sit down one more time and make another list. Write down everything that you are planning to do for the remodel. Will you need paint? Are you going to redo the flooring? Are you going to have a custom closet installed? Maybe you want to purchase all new furniture.
When you have a list of things to do for your new room, you can break up the amount of money that you have set aside for the room and assign a particular amount to each category of the remodel. If you don’t care too much about the brand of the paint, but you want really nice furniture, you may want to give a bigger chunk of money to furniture, and less to paint. Maybe you just want a less expensive flooring option, but a really nice custom closet, so you can assign more money to the closet and less to the flooring. Considering every option will help you to come up with the perfect budget for the room of your dreams.
